The objective of the Smart Materials and Structures Work-shop initiated by the United States Army Research Office was to review the current state-of-the-art and explore research activities which can be best applied to expand and advance the technology and science of smart materials. The primary focus of the workshop was to 1) review and identify smart materials that contain inherent and or integrated intelligence to adapt to environment and external or internal conditions such as strain, temperature, failure, etc.; 2) review and evaluate mathematical issues of constitutive relations modeling and control of these highly nonlinear systems; and 3) investigate means of applying smart material concepts in structures to realize vibration suppression, shape control, damage control, and structural control (develop smart materials that can have programmed material properties such as stiffness and strength as a function of temperature and time).
The workshop was designed to... give direction to the present and future research in smart materials and structures and related mathematical issues. The participants were invited based on their past record of accomplishments in research and implementation of smart material/structures concepts and constitutive or control modeling.
The title of the workshop differentiates between smarter materials and smart structures. As this volume will illustrate, it is very difficult to categorize many of the technologies and/or sciences... One of the essential elements in smart materials research is the integration of several technologies and the experimentation with new paradigms. Creating superficial compartments to describe this multidisciplinary science is in itself contrary to one of the unique and exciting elements that characterizes this technology.
