Goya's "Executions on the Third of May" forms the leitmotif of this first novel, as it does the life of the protagonist, Adam Krinsky. At 14, orphaned by the Nazis, Adam has emigrated from Poland to New York with his Uncle Bolek, now owner of a fashionable fur salon. Adam wants to be an artist, and Goya's painting remains in his mind, seeming to echo the brutality his parents experienced. This bildungsroman follows Adam through his adolescence and young adulthood in his search for life, love, an artistic voice, and his Jewish identity. It also paints a vivid picture of postwar Manhattan, especially the arts scene (Salvador Dali and Charlie Parker make cameo appearances), and is written with a raw power and vitality that will undoubtedly become more polished as the author matures. Recommended for general and YA collections. Marcia G. Fuchs, Guilford Free Lib., Ct.
