A history of love as typified by ten famous French couplesbeginning with Heloise and Abelard and ending with Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre. The author also presents the stories of Moliere and Armande, Voltaire and the Marquise du Chatelet, the Marquis and Marquise de Sade, etc. Although Barry attempts some psychological analysis with all ten couples, he is particularly knowledgeable about Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas; he was Stein's "adopted" nephew and spent time with the two in their later years. Thoroughly researchedthere are extensive end notesthe book is a fascinating history of love. Barry chose France because, "what land has contributed more to the ways and means, the lore and language, of love . . . ?" A very readable, unique book, recommended for most libraries.
