Seller: Rareeclectic, Pound ridge, NY, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good Plus. 1st Edition. First Edition (University Press of Mississippi=NAP). Mr. Faulkner has inscribed the book near the top of the title page ( 'For Alex MacLean, an old Marine Flying Buddy, Jimmy'), and signed it again further down on the title page ( 'Jim Faulkner, 12 Sept 1986' ). You can see the red and green covers in the photos. They are very clean. There is one tiny scuff on the front cover. The corners and edges are in excellent shape. So is the spine. The copper-colored lettering on the spine is shiny and bright. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers. There are no binding issues. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. The pages are exceptionally clean. That includes the white inside covers and end papers. I'm not seeing any conspicuous creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. There is an eight page section of photographs. They are all in excellent shape. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I've rated it only Good Plus due to the edge tears that you can see in the photos. There is also a small triangular loss off the top edge of the front. The flaps are in very good condition with just a thin bit of toning off the top and bottom edges. The jacket is not priced or clipped. I've had it in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book which goes back a number of years. From the dust jacket: 'This collection of affectionate reminiscences adds to the common lore about William Faulkner and his community. Jim Faulkner, the great writer's nephew and confidant, knows the characters and the lives of the Faulkner men, their families, and their old retainers better than any other Faulkner or friend alive knows them. Faulkner was his nephew's mentor and hunting companion, and Jim Faulkner was the last Faulkner to see him before his death in 1962. In Across The Creek Jim Faulkner recounts stories abounding in folklore, humor, family history, and fictionalized history, and provides a unique slant on the Faulkner family's life in the small southern town of Oxford, Mississippi. "Brother Will," as the Nobel Prize writer was known to his nephew, is rendered in these accounts is the patriarchal family figure, a position that has now fallen to the author of this book. A sense of adventure and misadventure colors these personal accounts. "Aunt Tee and Her Two Monuments" explains the mystery of why the town has two Confederate statues. "Roasting Black Buster" tells how Faulkner's hired man by mistake killed the prize bull for the family barbecue. "The Picture of John and Brother Will" gives the details behind Phil Mullen's well-known snapshot of the famous Faulkner brother novelists-- John and William-- one of the few pictures ever taken of them together. It shows a smiling John and a perturbed William, who is holding a tin funnel. William has come to his brother's house to retrieve a garden tractor John had borrowed and not returned on schedule. Across The Creek won't fail to amuse. As Floyd C. Watkins says of the pieces in this book, "They would be fun of themselves even if they did not provide new historical and literary information about the Faulkner people and country at all." Here in this entertaining book are more family stories about a major author whose life, family, and writing have generated continuing appeal and ever-renewed appreciation.'. Inscribed by Author(s).
