'A small jewel of a book, a knowleageable introduction to both
Stanislavski's personal development and to the content and range of his
writings'
Theatre Journal
'…shows the System to be a practical process - drama school students and actors will be grateful for it' Times Eductational Supplement
'A carefully documented study of peak interest and value to every serious student of acting theory' Choice

The Stanislavski 'system' is still the only comprehensive method of
actor training we possess. His theories can be hard to grasp and many
academic books are impenetrable on the subject. This is a concise book
for students that presents a readable introduction to the life and work
of Stanislavski. It shows the slow growth of the 'system', from its
roots in the tradition of Russian realism, to the various phases it
went through until the final emergence of the Method of Physical Action
in the years before his death. It also provides a short account of the
writing, publication and translation of Stanislavski's books on acting.

In this edition, Jean Benedetti makes several important updates in
the light of new material and new translations becoming available.

From Library Journal:
A study of the influential Russian actor/director. Stanislavski became a serious professional actor in the 1890s and established the Moscow Art Theatre. He studied and analyzed acting technique in order to develop his complex system to help actors find internal motivation for their roles. Stanislavski and his system became known worldwide, and he was a cult figure until his death in 1938. The first major English-language biography of Stanislavski in nearly 40 years, this is thoroughly researched and dense with quotes, many from original Russian sources. An important addition to theater collections, although the dry academic style will limit its audience to serious theater students. Benedetti has also written Stanislavski: An Introduction. A PBS special on Stanislavski is scheduled to air this spring, and Routledge will be releasing new editions of Stanislavski's own texts then, too.Ed. Marcia L. Perry, Berkshire Athenaeum, Pittsfield, Mass.

From Publishers Weekly:
"Drawing on newly available Russian-language sources, Benedetti limns a mercurial, uncompromising, possessed director who expected his colleagues to switch gears as quickly as he did. Regrettably, this book is solid, meticulous theater history but frustratingly dull biography," said PW. Photos.
