Synopsis
In May of 1931, Knute Rockne, Notre Dame's legendary football coach, died in a fiery plane crash over a Kansas wheat field. From that day until February 10, 1977, when we opened a musty trunk and removed a worn leather brief case, no one had seen the personal notes of the man thought to be the greatest football coach in history. We asked for Rockne's papers, and were given a treasure of insights into the Man who helped shape the Game.
We didn't stop there. We kept asking. We asked old footballers for their most memorable stories for the funniest thing that ever happened to them. The most unforgettable people they ever played with (or against). The result is Out of Bounds-An Anecdotal History of Notre Dame Football.
Here are good stories that have never been published: A Penn State coach who tried to slip a Mickey Finn to the entire Fighting Irish team; a Notre Dame player who credits his football experience with helping him to survive World War II's Bataan Death March; an All-American quarterback who falls to fifth string at Notre Dame; running backs who sprain their ankles in bed; and managers who dislocate their shoulders giving a rubdown.
In addition, we have a fine collection of rare photographs-many of which have never been published.
