Once a Warrior is the debut novel by a criminal defense attorney with the ability to share with the reader the emotional journey and skills required to represent someone on a murder charge. Her descriptive and emotional writing style brings the reader into the courtroom and seats you next to her at the defense table as she fights to save her young Native American client; a fight that requires her to understand not only the man but the culture and spirituality that defines him. It's a journey requiring not only top-notch professional skills but demands she confront her own fears as her protective capsule is peeled away during the fight of her lifetime. This unusual trial evokes both laughter and sorrow from the riveting beginning through a series of unexpected twists that ultimately erupts in its surprising ending.

Mary M. McMahon practices criminal defense exclusively in state and federal court at both the trial and appellate court levels. She has represented people throughout Minnesota and other states. She was chosen as a Super Lawyer by her peers within two years after graduating from law school. Her practice is limited to violent crimes and most of her cases are either murder or sex crimes. She has traveled to Africa as a United States criminal justice delegate, regularly teaches continuing legal education classes to other lawyers and is an adjunct law professor at a Minnesota law school. Even though McMahon is a petite blonde of Irish-American heritage, the majority of her clients are Native American. She is knowledgeable about their culture and spirituality. She is familiar with the Dakota/Lakota and Ojibwe languages. She is often asked to speak at Native American events including prison pow wows and is a supporter of Native American rights. McMahon has two other novels in progress.
Mary McMahon has quickly established herself as one of a handful of criminal defense attorneys to go to when you are in trouble in Minnesota or in Indian Country. With this novel, she begins to establish herself as a master story teller. Don't be surprised; criminal trials are about stories; and successful criminal defense attorneys have always been great story tellers. McMahon brings the reader into a criminal trial in a way they have seldom seen. --Michael Cromett Criminal Defense Attorney and Adjunct Law Professor
