This proficiency-based text, based on materials originally developed as the core of a six-week intensive Arabic FAST (Familiarization and Short Term) course at the Foreign Service Institute, is designed to provide beginners in Arabic with maximum linguistic and cultural exposure in a short period, about 100 hours of contact time. It consists of 14 lessons with dialogs and exercises dealing with day-to-day scenarios. Each lesson includes cultural notes on American-Arab interaction; notes on learner strategies for managing Arabic conversations with a limited amount of language; and grammar explanations in clear, non-technical language.
Transcription is used instead of Arabic script to accelerate spoken performance, although the dialogs are also shown in Arabic script. Includes English-Arabic and Arabic-English glossaries; appendices listing common idioms and courtesy expressions, and other useful terms; and instructor's notes.
A set of 7 audiocassettes accompanying the text is also available.
