In this guide, medical writer Donahue stresses prevention as far more effective than any therapy now available for treating stroke. A thorough description of stroke and 11 factors that heighten the risk of stroke are presented. Hypertension, high blood cholesterol levels, smoking, obesity, and alcohol abuse are mentioned as factors readily controllable through changes in diet, lifestyle, or with medication. Ministrokes, or transient ischemic attacks, are described as warning signs of a high risk of stroke. Information on the rehabilitation of the stroke victim and the return home is also included.
