The Hamiltons ( How To Be Your Own Contractor , Collier: Macmillan, 1991) are well qualified to write this book, having renovated 13 houses over the years. They cover the entire do-it-yourself gamut, from hanging a picture to painting the exterior of a house. Topics include wallpapering, floor installation, storage, outdoor projects, plumbing, and various repairs. Their instructions are written in an easy-to-follow, step-by-step manner and contain various "tricks of the trade," which may save readers untold amounts of time and labor. However, this book stands out (especially for beginners) because of the authors' recommendations for hiring professionals to perform the more difficult jobs. Illustrations and index not seen. Recommended for all public libraries.
