John Arena served the field of special education as editor/publisher of Academic Therapy Publications from 1965 until his untimely death in 1989.
A man of many talents, John was known for his expertise as a reading specialist, college instructor, writer, editor, and publisher. Early in his career as an educator, he taught physically disabled students, and later became principal of a school in northern California.
Grade 4-8-In this unusual retelling, the story is first written in prose and is then recast as a play. The first version leaves out the induction and inserts an introduction into Act I, Scene 1, which is not in the original. Much effort is spent explaining the times and apologizing for Petruchio's behavior. These editorial comments are distracting and interrupt the flow of the narrative. The only appended material is a two-page biography of Shakespeare and a one-page description of the Globe Theatre, which says that it was torn down by the Puritans to build houses, not because they disapproved of plays. Unfortunately, all of Shakespeare's wit and poetry is lost in this simplified adaptation. The imaginative wordplay that draws readers into the relationship between Petruchio and Katherine is not evident, and the liveliness found in Bruce Coville's recent editions of other Shakespeare plays (Dial) is missing. Leon Garfield's Shakespeare Stories (Houghton, 1991) is still the best retelling of the plays for young audiences. Anderson's version is not useful to teens studying Shakespeare, and it won't appeal to younger students, for whom it seems to be written. It might make them wonder why Shakespeare is a big deal.
