Quantifying Behavior the JWatcher Way provides detailed instructions for the freely-distributed computer program JWatcher. This Macintosh/Windows application can be used to address any theoretical problem that requires a complex sequence of actions to be scored by a human observer. More than simply a computer manual, Quantifying Behavior the JWatcher Way provides laboratory exercises and strategic advice to help both students and professionals learn how to quantify and analyze behavior.

Review:

We recommend this book to anyone studying behavior, from undergraduate students to experienced behavioral researchers. Its short chapters and concise directions allow one to skip around the book easily to find the pertinent information for a particular project without having to wade through vast amounts of superfluous material. This book is a remarkable improvement over the online manuals, and, although it is possible to use JWatcher without this book, we don't recommend it. This book serves not only as an instruction manual, it is a guide to the scientific method, helping researchers seek new strategies for quantifying behavior. --Amy Worthington and Alison Egge, The Condor

This book is a perfect introduction to how to use JWatcher and how to measure and quantify behavior. While navigating through the many features of the program, Blumstein and Daniel teach the user how to think about scoring behavior and indicate new quantification and statistical techniques that the user may not have considered. One of the valuable aspects of this book is that it is accessible to people at all levels of experience. An experienced behaviorist may pick up the book, skip immediately to how to use the program, and begin creating an ethogram and scoring behavior; whereas, an undergraduate can start reading on page 1 about how to quantify behavior and how to think about defining behavioral patterns. --Theodore Stankowich, Integrative and Comparative Biology
