9780879052430: NEW COWBOY POETRY

Synopsis

Whether you consider yourself a real cowpoke or a western romantic, you are going to enjoy this batch of new cowboy poems. Reading them aloud, it's easy to get caught up in the spirit of the West. You can almost hear the creak of saddle leather, smell the aroma of chuck wagon coffee, and feel the glow of a mellow campfire beneath a starry desert sky.
Here is a first-rate sampling of the best cowboy poetry being written today. The poets in this collection hail from all over the West--California, Montana, Texas and everywhere in between. Some of them have been seen on the "Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson, and all have recited their works at the granddaddy of the gatherings, the annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada.

From the Inside Flap

The readind and reciting of cowboy poetry has become a cultural phenomenon in the West, and it's spreading like wildfire across the country. Most western states hold their own "gatherings" each year, where ranching men and women recite poems written about their way of life. Add a little fiddle playing, some stories, and old-time cowboy songs, and you've go a right fine little party--an authentic slice of genuine Americana. Don't be surprised if you find your eyes welling up when you read about losing the ranch, about a granddad's legacy to his grandson, or about putting down a favorite horse. Sandwiched between the heartbreaks are humorous stories that'll put a little chuckle in your grin: it's the laughter that keeps these folkes going when times are tough, when winter blizzards threaten their herds and cut them off from their friends. We recommend you gather a few of your friends around a living room campfire and recite some poems out loud. In no time at all you'll be heading into the wide open ranges with horses loping beneath you, cattle lowing as you pas, and the aroma of sage filling your dreams. It's the magic of these poems.
