Companion to For Earth's Sake , this autobiographical volume by a leading environmentalist takes us through the formative years of Sierra Club Books, the founding of Friends of the Earth and the Earth Island Institute. Recounting environmental battles of the last 30 years, Brower here includes his introductions to books and pamphlets, speeches and other previously published writings. He discusses nuclear energy, genetic engineering, the IRS (one of the worst threats to the environment, he contends, is the present interpretation of the tax laws) and concludes with a blueprint for a "green century." Readers who have followed Brower's career will be delighted that he remains as feisty as ever; new readers will find an imposing history of environmental activism along with guidelines for the preservation of our planet. Skillfully interweaving new material and previously published work, this volume is an elegant testament to a remarkable man. Brower's ecological consciousness was first raised by the many youthful trips he made to the wilderness. Later he rose to executive director of the Sierra Club. After his forced resignation from that group, Brower went on to found Friends of the Earth and later Earth Island Institute, two organizations that have become very influential in today's environmental movement. This book, a companion to his For Earth's Sake (LJ 4/1/90), serves partly as autobiography and partly as call to action; for Brower, the two are probably inseparable. Brower's fine writing coupled with his ecological vision make this recommended reading.
