Synopsis

"I know my West some, but to realize how big and splendid and free and magnificent and God-made it really is, once in a while, I have to look on Maynard Dixon's pictures," said Wilbur Hall in 1937. Added to this new edition are 20 newly discovered Dixon paintings, along with 12 previously unpublished black-and-white photographs, many of them portraits of Dixon taken by Dorothea Lange. This beautiful book captures the magnificence of Dixon's work and his unique personality. (19930808)

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition along with Number Line to 1. You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They are exceptionally clean. I don't see any soiling at all. The gilt lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The cover edges and corners are in very good shape. There is a little bump below the top edge of the spine. The page edges of perfectly clean. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. This is quite important as the book is quite heavy due to the high quality of the pages. The pages are exceptionally clean. The white inside covers and end papers are perfectly clean and free of wear. I didn't see any soiling on any of the pages in the book. There is a small, thin crease off the top edge of six consecutive early pages, and later in the book I found a similar crease off the top edge of eight consecutive pages. I didn't see any corner creases, no placeholder creases. I saw only a very occasional little crinkle. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. I'm going to remove the fitted cover because it has some surface scratching and I don't want anyone to think that the scratching is on the jacket itself. I will place a new fitted protective cover after the photos are taken (hard to avoid glare off the protective cover). You can see, the jacket is very clean. I don't see any soiling. There are no tears. There is a very thin crease off a part of the bottom edge of the rear cover. There's also a thin scratch across the photograph on the rear cover, and I can see a few other little scratches on the rear. The large flaps are in excellent condition, very clean, no tears. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. Here are the chapter headings: Growing up on the Dead Level: 1875-1893; Fin-de-Siecle Illustrator: 1893-1900; Going East to See the West: 1900-1907; Illustrated West, The New York Years: 1907-1912; Turn of the Tide: 1912-1920; Visionary: 1920-1925; Murals and Modernism: 1925-1931; From Taos to Chaos: 1931-1935; To Thine Own Self Be True: 1935-1940; At Last: 1940-1946. From the dust jacket: 'To me, no painter has ever understood the light, the distances, the aboriginal ghostlines of the American West as well as Maynard Dixon. The great mood of his work is solitude, the effect of the land and space on people. While his work stands perfectly well on its claims to beauty, it offers a spiritual view of the West indispensable to anyone who would understand it.'-- Thomas McGuane. Seller Inventory # 005229
