An updated version of the All Music Guide to Jazz (LJ 4/1/95), this greatly expanded edition is an improvement upon what was already a first-rate publication. The number of artists included is up from 1150 to 1440, and the number of recordings listed has increased from 9000 to 13,200. The artist biographies are arranged alphabetically, with the best recordings of each artist listed after his or her citation. These recordings are scored on a scale of one to five. In addition, certain recordings are designated "landmark," "essential," or "first purchase." Other features include a brief history of jazz, an overview of jazz styles (shorter, alas, than that in the previous edition), a "beginner's guide" to jazz recordings, and several charts showing the historical development of the instruments most common to jazz.
