About the Author:

Gerald Early is the Merle Kling Professor of Modern Letters, professor of English and of African and Afro-American Studies, and director of the Center for Humanities at Washington University. A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he is the editor of several volumes, including This Is Where I Came In: Black America in the 1960s; The Sammy Davis Jr. Reader; Body Language: Writers on Sport; Speech and Power; Lure and Loathing: Essays on Race, Identity, and the Ambivalence of Assimilation; and My Soul's High Song: The Collected Works of Countee Cullen, as well as the author of The Culture of Bruising: Essays on Prizefighting, Literature, and Modern American Culture, which won the 1994 National Book Critics Circle Award for criticism; One Nation Under a Groove: Motown and American Culture; Daughters: On Family and Fatherhood; and Tuxedo Junction.

From Library Journal:

Early, who recently edited My Soul's High Song: The Collected Writings of Countee Cullen, Voice of the Harlem Renaissance ( LJ 1/91) and also authored Tuxedo Junction: Essays on American Culture (Free Pr., 1989), has chosen a diverse group of essays for this collection, ranging from boxing and Harlem to being subversive and being black. Featured writers such as Maya Angelou, Ralph Ellison, and Henry Louis Gates Jr. sketch portraits of fellow African Americans, among them Cicely Tyson, Charlie Christian, and Sterling A. Brown. Early's collection includes essays that an industrious researcher might locate individually in Opportunity, The Messenger , Phylon , and others. Still, their compilation makes them more readily available for those instructors wanting to add to the generally predictable canon of rhetoric or literature classes. More women should have been represented, but perhaps the next volume will address this shortcoming.
