The modern academic hood is barely recognizable as a "hood" at all. It is more like a small cape, the narrow front band of which passes over the shoulders and across the upper chest, the rest of which hangs down the back to about the waist. A fold in this back portion is a vestigial hood. The fold allows the contrasting color of the lining to be seen.
