A science-fiction novel of herculean power, Overmind is for young adult and older readers only. Fyfe Carale, a genetically superior gladiator mistakenly placed in the lowest caste on his planet at birth, escapes aboard a space freighter before the governments mistake is corrected by killing him. Jettisoned in an escape pod, he lands on a planet owned by the fantastically rich nobelman, Reminterat Koeb, and is sentenced to 25 years in his army for trespassing. Koeb is obsessed with discovering if God exists, and deals Fyfe his freedom if he can obtain, in any way, the five psychic individuals Koeb believes are needed to contact a possibly sentient being which is composed of residual psychic energy spread throughout the galaxy. ** Accompanying Fyfe will be Koebs chief advisor and powerful psychic himself, Yiulsek Eilusis. The group returns to Koebs planet and begins its inward efforts to contact the Entity. Fyfe, having no psychic powers, wanders from the group and into the galaxyfinally a free person, and with his view of the galaxy and human nature in general forever changed.
Each character is deftly drawn. Midiais Fenzer is a young musician who lives in a world that fiercely prosecutes psychics. Rufus the Cat is a sentient, talking housecat from a planet of intense urbanization and squalor. Twilo Ilsaxe* is the timid wife of a misogynistic miner on a planet where high winds force everyone to live underground. Kurge is an alien soldier in the galaxys largest corporate mercenarys guild, and Varied the Catcher is the head of security from Fyfes own planet.
Coffins clarity of expression and precision pacing in the telling of each individuals story and the groups psychologically charged interaction is brilliant.
