From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-9-Set during the War of 1812, this sequel to The Key to Honor (Royal Fireworks, 1996) continues the story of 15-year-old Nate Lawton. This eager young sailor is now a midshipman to the brig Hancock, part of the American fleet on Lake Erie. When the first lieutenant, a man hated by the crew for his seeming cruelty and obsession with punishments, dies in an accident, Nate is thrust into that position. Under the command of the devious Captain England, Nate, like his predecessor, becomes the focus of hatred and contempt from the other sailors. Forced to tiptoe the delicate line between following orders and doing the right thing, he is filled with despair, and considers abandoning the ship. In the crucial battle with the English, Nate takes command of the ship, rescues the admiral of the fleet, and saves his career. Along with some exciting battle scenes, there are many detailed illustrations of sailing ships, as well as an extensive glossary of naval terms. Wanttaja's knowledge of his subject is vast, and while this novel may be of interest to history buffs, and to those with an interest in sailing, the author's attempt at authenticity, especially in the dialogue, detracts from the story. The endless jargon and excessive details regarding ships will leave most readers dead in the water.
