Although we know the president of the United States as the person who runs the government of our nation, do we know what the responsibilities of the president actually are? And, do we understand what effect his actions have? HAIL TO THE CHIEF: THE AMERICAN PRESIDENCY investigates the office of the presidency and its power. It details how this job was inaugurated, how it has changed over time, and why the person in this position is considered one of the most important and powerful leaders in the world. Examples of presidential actions and orders include every president from George Washington to Bill Clinton. Unique because of its thematic exploration of the presidency, rather than the people who have held the job, HAIL TO THE CHIEF is a significant and fascinating introduction to the mechanics of the American government.

Alan Witschonke's bold portraits and sweeping depictions of the circumstances that have made the American presidency a notable and compelling subject for the entire world will capture the interest of young readers. HAIL TO THE CHIEF brings vividly into focus all the exciting details of the office of the President of the United States.

About the Author:
Don Robb began his second career in educational publishing after seven years as a teacher. After graduating from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, where he studied history and political science, Don taught Spanish, French, and English as a second language at the high school level in Toledo, Ohio, then later at a junior high school in Hackensack, New Jersey.

His first job in publishing was as a foreign language consultant for Holt, Rinehart. He went on to serve in a variety of editorial and marketing capacities there, and at Houghton Mifflin Co., where he became a vice president. He left that position to join Charlesbridge (then Mastery Education Corporation) in 1981.

Don is an avid reader and a writer. His particular interests are history--especially American history--science non-fiction, and mysteries.
From School Library Journal:

Gr 3-5-An introduction to aspects of the presidency and some of the men who have held the position. Fourteen double-page spreads examine such themes as the responsibilities of the chief executive as stated in the Constitution; "Enforcing the Laws"; and "Getting Elected." Each subject is introduced with a specific example of a president, such as Abraham Lincoln in "Leaders in War." Two brief paragraphs that relate some facts about his presidency and his position in the Civil War are followed by one-to-two line mentions of other presidents in a similar role, e.g., George Bush in the Persian Gulf. Opposite each informational page is an illustration of the lead subject against colorful background images of the event mentioned. (Lincoln is shown before a soldier with a torn flag, a slave picking cotton, and a figure representing General Grant.) A combination index/list of presidents (with their terms of office, party affiliation, and birth and death dates) is included. Unfortunately, the rudimentary information offered won't be enough to satisfy report writers and the text is not as engaging as Judith St. George's more personal So You Want to Be President? (Philomel, 2000).-Margaret C. Howell, West Springfield Elementary School, VA
