Kenneth Mallory, an award-winning children's book author, is the head of the publishing department at the New England Aquarium. He has traveled extensively doing research on diverse topics, from stranded pilot whales to tropical forests. While exploring national parks in Europe, Africa, Central America, and the United States, he developed his photography and travel-writing skills. He has also spent many hours scuba diving off the coasts of New England, Venezuela, Mexico, Belize, and the Bahamas, and in the waters of the Red Sea. He lives in Massachusetts.
Kindergarten-Grade 2-Mallory introduces the watery worlds of 14 different ocean dwellers and describes how they are born, grow, and learn to survive. He asks readers to imagine how it must feel to have the tail and fins of a fish, the waterproof fur of a sea otter, the leathery shell of a turtle, etc. Full-color illustrations on double-page spreads pair close-up and distant perspectives of each animal. Facts about size, habitat, physical characteristics, and behavior are worked into the brief narrative. The information presented is very basic, and the undistinguished artwork will not put this into the category of "must have." Nevertheless, the theme of growing up and living in a family make this title accessible to young children.?Lisa Wu Stowe, Great Neck Library, NY
