Reviews

Written and compiled by the long-term Jewish chaplain at Brandeis University, this useful though hardly profound handbook is at once a work of advocacy and a practical guide on all the steps that lead to a successful C.O. claim. The first third of the book summarizes the legal definiton of C.O., reviews the forms used in processing a claim, and advises individuals on how to reply to a review board's often tricky questions. The latter portion presents excerpts from petitions written by Jewish C.O.s over the years. Intended primarily for Jews, and containing one illuminating but skimpy chapter on the tradition of nonviolence in Judaism, the book could inform any prospective C.O.
