Mansoor, author of Political and Diplomatic History of the Arab World, 1900-1967 ( LJ 9/1/72) in addition to numerous other works on the languages and politics of the Near East, here presents a clear and concise outline of Jewish history and thought. He analyzes Jewish culture chronologically from the biblical era to the es tablishment of a modern Israel. Each chapter contains general introductory notes, a detailed outline, concluding observations, background reading, and topics for discussion. Broad trends as well as individual events and personalities are discussed. Chapters are devoted to Hellenism, Judaism and Christianity, Judaism and Islam, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Masada, and Martin Buber. While some philosophical thought is reduced to simplistic terms, the definitions are precise and the charts and bibliographies are helpful. This volume will serve as an interesting and useful tool to laypeople, students, and teachers. Highly recommended.
