Kindergarten-Grade 2 The Prince of the Rabbits is bored with his life, and this picture book tells how he comes to realize the magic and mystery in the everyday. The writing is smooth, but occasionally becomes quite fuzzy ("There were as many shadows as things, and even they were speaking"). The book is attractive: each page of bordered text faces a glowing, dreamlike illustration, and Edens' use of vibrant color and unusual perspective is especially effective. But the total effect is self-consciously "meaningful." The Prince of the Rabbits seems to be trying to be one of those children's books (like The Velveteen Rabbit) that college kids adopt as a cult favorite.
