Introduction: Swedish
Grade 7 Up The strangely beautiful Pietari, a young child not unlike Saint-Exupery's Little Prince (HBJ, 1943), journeys from his beloved primeval Meadow, where time and evil are nonexistent, into a world in which fear and greed have scorched the earth and corrupted the hearts of its inhabitants. It is his mission to restore purity to the land and hope to its people by sowing the land with seeds, buds and "sparks of light" from the shining eyes of swallows he has gathered along the way. Taken separately, the text is beautifully told and rich in imagery; the large, full-color gouaches and oil paintings illustrating it are hauntingly beautiful. Unfortunately, as a picture book, it lacks cohesiveness. The text was written to accompany already existing artwork and, as a result, the text and illustrations are not well integrated. Though the illustrator's primitive style lovingly portrays the primordial world of the Meadow, it fails to capture the more dynamic events of the tale. The Latin phrases in the Wolf's dialogue seem pretentious and may prove distracting (there is a glossary at the back of the book). Since the vocabulary is too difficult for young children and the large picture book format may turn off older children, this book may have difficulty finding an audience. Yet despite these drawbacks, the book's message about humankind's ability to recapture its lost innocence is so powerful that it might prove a worthwhile addition for collections in which mythology and The Little Prince are popular.
