Synopsis

Ultralight spin-fishing provides much the same challenge and excitement as fly-fishing--with a mere fraction of the investment in equipment. More accurate casts, more strikes, and a better feel for what's happening at the end of the line are just some of the benefits of this popular angling method.

Despite its name, ultralight equipment is robust enough for pursuing trophy-sized freshwater fish as well as more aggressive saltwater species. In this classic, comprehensive guide to ultralight fishing--voted one of the best 25 fishing books in print by Field and Stream―professional guide Peter Cammann presents the latest information on equipment and clearly explains the key tactics, techniques, and lures you need to be most effective with all kinds of fish. Tips for catching trout, bass, salmon, northern pike, walleye, panfish, and such saltwater species as bluefish, striped bass, and barracuda are all covered in detail. Casting and other techniques are fully illustrated. Includes resource appendix for recommended equipment.

Reviews

When anglers decide to try a more challenging alternative to fishing with the popular spinning rod and reel, they usually opt for flyfishing or ultralight spin-fishing. The latter, which uses downsized spinning gear, lacks the cachet of flyfishing, but its coterie of enthusiasts is growing as more fishers discover the thrill of catching big fish on small equipment. Much finesse is required to reel in, for instance, a leaping 16-pound salmon using a lightweight rod and a six-pound test line. Cammann (Fishing Vermont's Streams and Lakes, Countryman, 1992) clearly explains in text and pictures the tackle and techniques that will enable anglers to succeed in their quest for fish ranging from bass to barracuda. Recommended for public libraries.

Those interested in putting more fun (not to mention fish) into their fishing would be wise to invest in ultralight spin fishing. Doing so doesn't mean going on the cheap: a top-of-the-line ultralight rod and reel can cost $200, although decent equipment is available for less. A major advantage of ultralight is that the small rod and reel can be stashed in a car trunk or backpack. What's better, smaller fish are more exciting to catch on such equipment. Cammann leads the prospective ultralighter step-by-step through fishing with this gear, writing straightforwardly and clearly and avoiding the ponderousness that so often afflicts similar texts. Although hooking and landing a large salmon or bluefish on ultralight equipment is truly adventurous, and Cammann devotes chapters to catching those strong, powerful fish with ultralight, the average weekend warrior will wisely go for panfish, trout, and the occasional bass or walleye, so Cammann advises how to catch them, too.
