· 34 up-to-date regional and downtown maps
· calendar guides to annual events and celebrations
· an alphabetical "what's where" subject guide for trip planning
· handy icons that point out places that offer best value, cater to families, welcome pets, and provide handicapped access
An independently researched guide; no paid listings. 80 black & white photographs, 34 maps, index.

This 10th edition of Maine: An Explorer's Guide marks its 20th year in print. The first edition of this book was the first ever to describe Maine region by region, combining overviews with detailed descriptions of things to see and do, plus unpaid and unsolicited personal impressions of lodging, dining, and shopping.
That first guide was just 185 pages long. Back in 1981 Maine had no B&Bs, and few kayaking outfitters or whale-watching expeditions. My three sons—ages three, six, and eight—helped research reasonably priced rental cottages, ice cream stands, and beaches.
By 1986 Maine's resort facilities were expanding too quickly for one person to check, particularly as I was writing weekly summer articles about New England for The Boston Globe. Maine writer Mimi Steadman stepped in to cover the mid-coast region, which she did until 1994, when Bangor native Elizabeth Roundy Richards became coauthor.
We are frequently told that Maine: An Explorer's Guide gets better with each new edition, which is still based squarely on months of research. Every other year we hit the road, confirming what we know and invariably making new discoveries—from memorable meals to island petroglyphs to hidden swimming quarries.
We appreciate the support of booksellers who have come to know and recommend Maine: An Explorer's Guide over the years. And we are proud of the impact it has had, helping to steer hundreds of thousands of readers to discover and enjoy many Maines.—Christina Tree
