"Girls to the Rescue turns a new leaf and Prince Charming is history."--Sallie Han, New York Daily News. The serial is described by Mary Pipher as "a powerful antidote to all those helpless, hopeless princess stories."

Grade 3-6-A collection of eight stories that are set in the 20th century in various countries. Despite the inclusion of some foreign words along with their definitions, the settings are not well developed, the plots are not dependent upon the locations, and readers are not provided with any information about the individual cultures. The "girl-power" theme of each of the selections is obvious and transparent. In "Fishing for Trouble," Kayla proves to her stuck-up cousin from Los Angeles that she is not a dumb country girl when she saves his life during a summer storm in Mississippi. Inspired by her mother's 1960s activism, Emily leads her classmates in a demonstration to "Save Wellington Woods!!," the wildlife refuge next to her school. In "Rachel's Promise," a story set in Minsk, Rachel vows to take care of her younger sister Ida and always make her happy. When Ida longs for pretty clothes, Rachel learns to sew by reading library books and starts a small business to raise money. Although the writing is neither distinguished nor memorable, fans of Lansky's previous collections may enjoy reading more stories about girls who stand up and are counted.
