Bruce Lansky has created 18 poetry anthologies and 3 silly song book anthologies. Lansky created the popular GigglePoetry.com website for children and the PoetryTeachers.com website for teachers. He also created the Girls to the Rescue series, the New Fangled Fairy Tales series, and the Can You Solve the Mystery series.
Grade 3-6 - Another zany collection by the veteran team that created Kids Pick the Funniest Poems (Meadowbrook, 1991). This anthology is similar in size, length, and style. There is one poem per page (occasionally per spread) accompanied by a large cartoon, rendered in black and white and shades of gray. Well-known poets like Jack Prelutsky and Shel Silverstein are represented as are some lesser-known authors. The selections are arranged loosely by standard topics: families, friends, animals, holidays, Mother Goose spoofs, etc. Kids will enjoy the irreverent treatments of familiar topics: "My goldfish died this morning/At exactly half past seven./My mother helped me say a prayer,/Then flushed him into heaven." Many of the poems make fun of things kids love to slam, such as school lunch: "Our school lunch is from outer space,/Endangering the human race." Carpenter's illustrations capture the punch line of each selection, adding to the humor. A kid-pleasing choice for any poetry collection. - Donna Cardon, Provo City Library, UT
