A collection of mystery stories set in Hollywood includes contributions by Ross Macdonald, Jon L. Breen, Robert Bloch, Fritz Leiber, and Ed Gorman, among others

All the works incorporated here have Hollywood as their setting; most feature the movie industry as a backdrop. Introduced by John Jakes, this collection includes short stories, novellas, and one novel running from 1939 to 1993. The quality of the pieces varies from pulp magazine fare to some fairly sophisticated short fiction. The stories might best be described as mysterious, with some straightforward, hard-boiled mysteries and some verging on the creepy and weird. A few are real standouts, including Tom Reamy's "Under the Hollywood Sign," Fritz Leiber's "The Girl with the Hungry Eyes," Ron Goulart's amusing "How Come My Dog Don't Bark?," and John Jakes's "The Man Who Wanted To Be in the Movies." Recommended where short fiction is collected.
