Fifteen-year-old Stella is hired as an assistant stage manager for a theater repertory company's Christmas production of "Peter Pan," and although the director envisions a lighthearted play, Stella brings about an entirely different result

Beryl Bainbridge wrote seventeen novels, two travel books and five plays for stage and television, she was shortlisted for the Booker Prize five times, and won literary awards including the Whitbread Prize and the Author of the Year Award at the British Book Awards. She died in July 2010.
The voices of Paul McGann weave this neighborhood tale of Liverpool. At age fifteen, Stella is a self-possessed young woman who wreaks havoc on the troopers at the regional theater where she has hired on as a gofer. This is not a lighthearted romp though the vagaries of theater life, but rather a sadness as told at the hands of the gossips at the corner table. As lies and intrigues abound, Paul McGann ably plays every part in the unraveling of these lives with gentleness and sensitivity. B.H.B.
