Attempting to redirect her own life, the author learns from personal interviews with a judge turned oil driller on the North Slope, a music store owner who became a symphony conductor, two nurses who helped develop agriculture in the Matanuska Valley, an adventure-seeking young man who established a thriving construction company in the Interior, and eighty others who boldly built new lives and careers in The Great Land.

We told people that we were gathering material for a book. We had joked to our friends that we might look for jobs in Alaska. Our children worried that we might telephone home and say, "Pack your things, we're moving North." In reality, like thousands of gold rush stampeders whose spirits forever stalk the trails and streams of the Yukon, we were searching to find ourselves -- or to find contentment.
