As for detail and comprehensiveness--there is nothing else remotely like this study on any part of the 19th century. He covers prose, poetry and criticism. He devotes due space to the giants such as Pushkin and Gogol, and also provides a leisurely, and interesting, look at dozens of lesser figures (some of whom are not even listed in standard Soviet reference works) and the groups, polemics, and theories in which they were involved. Much of the material will be new even to Slavists. And every student and teacher will be grateful to the author for the wealth of information on so many areas.
W. E. Brown's previous volumes, A History of l 7th- Century Russian Literature and A History of 18th-Century Russian Literature, were widely praised by both general reviewers and Slavic specialists--they were selected by Choice as Academic Books of the Year in 1979. The virtues of his previous books also mark A History of Russian Literature of the Romantic Period--a lucid prose style, the broad concerns of a humanist of the old school (trained as a Classicist and a teacher of English as well as Russian), easy familiarity with other European languages, and the calm, elevated view of a man of a long perspective.
William Edward Brown received his Ph.D. in Classics from Yale University. From 1927 until 1973, Dr. Brown taught Greek and Russian language, as well as Greek, Roman, Russian and Byzantine History at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. From 1969 he held the Smith Chair in Greek; in 1974 he was awarded an honory Doctorate of Humane Letters.
