Virginian woodworker Self provides a survey of the many methods and tools used in wood joinery, from the simple butt joint to the refined crafting of the dovetail. His first chapter covers the characteristics of lumber and specific wood types, which is critical to predicting how joints will behave under conditions of stress and humidity. Much of his remaining text discusses the cutting and shaping of various joints using power saws, routers, hand tools, and biscuit joiners (the latter being the latest innovation in joinery). In the closing chapters he explains the proper uses of glues and fas teners. While Self's immense practical knowledge of joinery is evident, his off hand writing style is heavily sprinkled with woodworking terms and may leave behind most novice woodworkers.
