The early Christians lived in the power of the Holy Spirit. The miraculous new life they had in Christ amazed the world, and "turned it upside down."
It you have ever asked, "What happened to those wonderful things that used to happen in the Church?" you will be excited to know that many Christians have discovered that they can still happen in our day.
Healing, miracles, prophecy, and other gifts of the Holy Spirit are being seen and heard, as is the spiritual "fruit" of the Holy Spirit. They are being experienced by everyday Christians who are receiving a new kind of life in the power of the Spirit.
The Rev. Dennis J. Bennett was one of the key figures in the charismatic renewal for over thirty years. The 1973 Encyclopedia Britannica Yearbook says:
"When, in 1960, Father Dennis Bennett announced to his congregation, St. Mark's Episcopal Church at Van Nuys, California, that he had experienced a new outpouring of God's Spirit, the recent movement can be said to have begun. . . . Before long, 'charismatic renewal' became an issue across the land."
These events, and what followed, Dennis Bennett told in plain and moving fashion in his book, Nine O'clock in the Morning.
Now in this book, The Holy Spirit and You, Dennis and his wife, Rita, tell simply and readably just how you can experience the same outpouring of the Holy Spirit in your life that has been experienced in the lives of hundreds of thousand of others since that fateful day in 1960. Even in the middle of this increasingly frightening world and times, you can have the same peace, joy, and love that was such a part of the early Church.
This book has been read by thousands of people of many backgrounds all over the world. It is available in Dutch, English, French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic, and Swedish. It has been hailed as a key textbook on the subject by leaders in groups as diverse as Roman Catholic and Assemblies of God. Over 1 million copies have been sold.

Reverend Dennis Bennett (1917–1991) was born in England on October 28, 1917, the son of a Congregational minister. In 1949, he was ordained into the Congregational church, but in 1952 became ordained as an Episcopal priest. He was "prominently identified with the charismatic renewal from the beginning. The movement is usually dated from the Sunday morning in 1959 when Bennett announced to his congregation in Van Nuys, California, that he had been baptized with the Holy Spirit and had spoken in tongues. As a result, a small opposition group in the congregation challenged him to cease and desist from what later came to be called charismatic experiences. He voluntarily resigned his pastorate, feeling that he did not have adequate understanding to defend his position. In 1960, he accepted an invitation to become vicar of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Seattle, Washington. Within six years the little mission church had become a strong parish. For a decade it was a major center from which word of baptism with the Holy Spirit would spread worldwide, especially in the mainline denominations. Thousands of people experienced the baptism of the Holy Spirit as a result of hearing Bennett's testimony.
