Synopsis
When Carol Cook befriends Gilbert Escobedo who is aiding the police task force search for a serial rapist who victimized Carol and 200 others, she does not suspect the dangerous criminal being sought is also the police department's favorite ride-along companion. Carol, victim 22, must ultimately identify her attacker and link him not only to rape, but murder.

In November 1988, a stranger in a ski mask raped Carol Bryan in her home. New to Dallas and without a social network in place, Bryan turned to a friendly acquaintance, Gilbert Escobedo, for support. On the surface, Escobedo was a successful businessman and outwardly a Christian; what Carol Bryan didn't know was that Escobedo was also the serial rapist who had assaulted her and dozens of other area women. Bryan and Escobedo developed a friendship, a business partnership, even a short romance, despite her growing alarm at Escobedo's odd behavior and violent outbursts. As Bryan worked with Dallas police to unmask the Ski Mask Rapist, more and more clues pointed to Escobedo and finally led to several dramatic confrontations. Although Bryan (now Cook) coauthors her own incredible story here, the writing throughout lacks descriptive detail or strong style. But the book works as a plainspoken testimony of one woman's courageous struggle to overcome a violent assault; it also includes an appendix on resources for crime victims. James Klise
