Capt. James Atkinson Smith loved the outdoors. Born in Connecticut, a state rich in wildlife, Smith learned how to hunt, fish and trap by age 12. Through trial and error and the coaching of his father and grandfather, he perfected his skills at field- dressing, skinning and preparing all the animals or birds he bagged.
Being an accomplished marksman had of course helped his hunting endeavors. As a U.S. Marine during the Korean conflict, he earned the Expert Rifleman's Badge and became an instructor in the use of small arms. The title "Captain" comes from Smith's 30-plus years in law enforcement. He began his career in 1952, as Chief Constable in his home state and later became Deputy Chief of Police. He held a sixth degree black belt in judo and karate and he taught defense procedures at various police academies.
