Grade 3-6 These 17 well-known fairy tales are introduced by a history of popular fairy tales and information about the illustrations, tile pictures made by Royal Doulton and placed in children's hospital wards between 1890 and World War I. Although there are better translations available, these versions were chosen from the same time period as the tiles, and the romantic, often overwritten style does suit the tile illustrations. Some of the tales, "The Sleeping Beauty," for example, are the original versions (Sleeping Beauty has two children which her stepmother threatens to eat) and are hard to find, but most are easily located. "The Princess and the Pea," "Thumbelina," "The Three Bears," "The Tinder Box" and "Henny-Penny" have no accompanying illustrations. The book is attractive, with large clear type, thick, creamy pages and illustrations on glossy paper. The tile reproductions are cleanly colored; the separations between tiles are obvious but not intrusive. The artwork is of interest more for its style and historical value than its content. Different artists worked on the panels, but all of the tiles are rendered in an old-fashioned, romantic style.
