About the Author
Sheila Cassidy's honest and wise books on suffering and healing have made her one of the UK's best-loved and most popular writers on pastoral care and personal growth. She is widely known for her work in the hospice movement, and as a young doctor who survived torture for daring to give medical care to an opponent of the Pinochet regime in Chile.

Cassidy, a physician, went to work in Chile. After treating a wounded revolutionary she was arrested, imprisoned, and tortured. Later, she returned to England and entered a contemplative monastery before becoming medical director of a small hospice. Here, she writes with simplicity about the terminally ill, the medical establishment, her moving visit to L'Arche (a religious community of men who live with and care for the handicapped), and her struggle to develop her own spirituality as a solitary lay person. Her book is important reading for hospice volunteers and excellent spiritual reading on classic themes of abandonment, death, loneliness, and poverty. Highly recommended for seminary and public libraries.
