Synopsis
Lewis Spence was one of the greatest scholars of Atlantis literature. His book is the best introduction to the story of Atlantis. Plato's account of Atlantis 600 BC is surveyed by the author in a particularly masterly chapter and forms the foundation for the rest of his work. Spence assembles reliable evidence from many disciplines - archeology, anthropology, geology, folklore - to show that a definite Atlantean culture-complex existed on both sides of the Atlantic and that submerged continent was the means of dissemination from east to west. Particularly noteworthy is his discussion of the myths and legends of the North American Indians, the Indians of Brazil and the Aztecs of Mexico - all bearing witness to the Atlantis culture. He traces the inscriptions which link the iconography of the Southern Mexicans with Egyptian and European themes, showing their connection wit ha common culture source. He compares the traditions of a great deluge from many countries. Like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, he successfully assembles folk memories, traditions and artifacts to create a picture of the great lost land mass and its marvelous culture.
