Synopsis

William Stanley Haseltine (1835 – 1900) was an American painter and draftsman who was associated with the Düsseldorf School of Painting, the Hudson River School and Luminism. Haseltine studied at the University of Pennsylvania and then at Harvard University, where he received a degree in 1854. The Düsseldorf School of Painting is a term referring to a group of painters who taught or studied at the Düsseldorf Academy. The work of the Düsseldorf School is characterized by finely detailed yet fanciful landscapes, often with religious or allegorical stories set in the landscapes. The Düsseldorf School had a significant influence on the Hudson River School in the United States. This is the catalog published in conjunction with the exhibition EXPRESSIONS OF PLACE: THE ART OF WILLIAM STANLEY HASELTINE which showed at The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and Brandywine River Museum in Pennsylvania in 1992 and 1993.
