Restored to its former glory as a salon de compagnie, with its gilded paneling and full complement of furnishings, it now not only represents the high point of interior decoration in late-eighteenth-century France, but also is an example of how the period room can be displayed in a more engaging manner in the twenty-first century. .The original purpose of renovating the Salon Doré was the restoration of its beautiful gilded paneling as a fine example of French Neoclassical architecture. The superlative design and carving of the various elements -- the mirrors with their crowning trophies of the arts, the grand Corinthian pilasters, the door frames decorated with plaster overdoors modeled in low and high relief -- required extensive conservation to improve their sculptural details and gilding. .
