Goldberg offers 1987's Black Monday to bolster mildly "contrarian" stock-buying advice, but admits he "lost almost as much, percentage-wise, as others did." Similar candor, clear but limited tutorials, and many examples also accompany advice on bonds, real estate, franchises, and collectibles. Goldberg is the discursive uncle, with something for everyone. Commodities may be for you "if action is more important to you than winning or losing." Recent works that offer more thorough, readable help for the novice include Gary Klott's The New York Times Complete Guide to Personal Investing ( LJ 1/87) and Andrew Tobias's The Only Other Investment Guide You'll Ever Need ( LJ 10/15/87). Not recommended. Justine Roberts, Univ. of California at San Francisco Lib.
