Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Clean, tight, unmarked; light wear to corners; otherwise very minimal wear; An unsettling exploration of the role of the intellectual in a post-literate age. With mass culture the dominant force of the last half of the 20th century, Powe believes the literate man, exiled from the mainstream of society, can only be - and must become - the critic of his surroundings: the "solitary outlaw". Marshall McLuhan, Glenn Gould, Wyndham Lewis, Elias Canetti, and Pierre Elliott Trudeau are five thinkers who attempted to transcend the limitations of mass mentality and communicate directly with individuals. B.W. Powe's essays offer stimulating insights into the solitary yet public positions of these men. Seller Inventory # 008052
