This comprehensive survey of the struggle to identify and convict former Nazis guilty of war crimes begins with a brief look at early postwar attempts to start the search and to establish a definition of what constitutes a war criminal. Ashman ( Diplomatic Crimes ) and Wagman ( Hubert Humphrey ) examine the cases of more prominent figures accused of war cries, among them Josef Mengele, Klaus Barbie and Adolf Eichmann, and present convincing evidence that the allegations about Kurt Waldheim's Nazi past are substantially accurate. They also discuss lesser figures, showing the difficulty of securing convictions, often because certain governments block prosecutions. The authors conclude with a nation-by-nation review of war crimes cases, noting that the record of the U.S. has been spotty and that the situation in Canada, Australia and the U.K. has been even less cooperative. A caveat: this important book is printed in 10-point type of an unusually high density, which makes reading it taxing. First serial to Newspaper Enterprise Association; author tour.
