Text: English, German (translation)
PreSchool-Grade 2 This book is an outgrowth of the author's belief that we will best be able to preserve our environment if children have been able to have direct emotional contact with animals. The text and photographs describe in an informal, conversational, and sometimes precious manner the physical characteristics and behavior of a family of greylag geese from hatching to adulthood and additionally provide an intimate glimpse into Kalas' fieldwork. A number of the photographs show Kalas and her preschool-aged son closely interacting with the geese. A sense of excitement about the hatching process is conveyed through the author's personal style, and her mission to encourage a feeling of kinship between readers and the geese is achieved. The translation is, however, awkward at times, and the vivid color photographs range from inspired to three which are out of focus and two which are annoyingly grainy. Even with these flaws, this is a useful first introduction to the world of nature for young children. Ellen Fader, Westport Public Library, Conn.
