PreSchool-Grade 2 The authors of The Goose Family Book (Picture Book Studio, 1986) have created another attractive nature book for younger children. The book is unique for its intensely personal angle. The Kalases believe that for chil dren to learn to love and respect nature, they must have direct emotional experi ence with it. Such an experience is pro vided here. The Kalases observed (and virtually lived with) three baby beavers for several years. The conversational text (with occasional stiffness perhaps caused by translation) invites readers to accompany the authors in all their discoveries. The large color photos show the beavers eating, playing, and sleeping from so close up that it seems possible to reach out and stroke them. Young readers may learn more facts from Lane's The Beaver (Dial, 1982) but only here will they learn what it is like to have a beaver nibble your sweat er. The authors succeed admirably in what they set out to do, but they do not make it clear that a wild animal is not a pet, however cute and cuddly it may be. In learning to respect nature, we also need to learn to leave it alone. Ruth S. Vose, San Francisco Pub . Lib .
