PreSchool-Grade 2-- One day, Mr. Mole announces to Owl that he is tired of his solitary, underground lifestyle and is off to see the world and make new friends. Worried Owl, in search of his wandering friend, learns of Mole's escapades from each animal that he encounters; Rabbit, Cat, Frog, Goose, Fox, Bear, Sheep, and Porcupine have all seen Mole and all have a tale to tell. Each story is told on a glorious double-page spread depicting the animal in its natural, although artististically enhanced habitat, including an eaten-out section (actually cut out) showing Mole's underground path through the landscape. Shortly after Owl gives up the search, Mole returns home to stay "because I found what I was looking for." Owl and readers are invited to look under a snow-covered flap (that in libraries will rip very quickly) to see Mole and his new friend curled up together in peaceful slumber. Although each animal setting is quite different, the warm, colorful illustrations create and sustain a gentle mood in a benevolent world. The cut-out mole hole and final flap are gimmicks, but effective ones. A beautiful melding of text and artwork draws readers into Owl's search for Mole and Mole's quest for his own happiness. --Janet DiGianni, North Andover High School, MA
