Illustrations and poetic text depict a playful tour of the alphabet

Grade 1-2--Alphabet Out Loud is neither a story nor a book to teach recognition of the 26 characters in the English language. Rather, Bragg uses the letters to explore concepts and activities in the everyday lives of two children; each letter is featured as part of a short, upbeat paragraph. Such actions as learning, making fudge (with recipe), singing, thinking, wishing, and yawning are included. Some subtle positive values and self-esteem building are incorporated into the explanations. Extension activities could be done in the classroom. The marker-outlined watercolor illustrations are large, contemporary, and colorful. Libraries looking to develop language arts collections will want to consider this playful title. --Cheryl Cufari, N.A. Walbran Elementary School, Oriskany, NY
